The history of our outfitters

Marc Farrar frequently brings his boys, Donald and Jean-Claude, camping in his "little natural paradise" where the Saint-Maurice and Flamand Rivers meet, where you can hunt and fish. The expedition is all the more exciting because the site is only accessible by train!

At that time, there are only two cottages in the vicinity. The exceptional attachment of the father to this spot will gradually make him buy these cottages while his project of sharing this extraordinary region with other nature lovers like him is slowly taking shape. At their first visit, his wife Monique and his daughter Lynda fall in love with the site.

The Farrar business modestly but passionately starts its activities in 1974. Unfortunately, Mr Farrar dies in 1976.

Guided by the same passion, the family decides to persue their father's dream. Donald and Jean-Claude build the business's third cottage, their first. Mrs Farrar, a true entrepreneur, runs the company.

Towards the end of the 70s, the family hears about a Scandinavian method that allows the construction of log cabins without using a single nail. The "Scandinavian Canadian log cabin" (!) dream takes shape during numerous family gatherings. Learning that Allan B. Mackie, Canada's specialist in this type of construction, was coming to the Laurentides region to give a training course, Donald registers and sets off.

In 1981, this wild dream becomes a reality: Donald supervises the construction work of a superb 10 bedroom American plan inn (accommodations and restaurant); this unique style inn in the Mauricie region was recently transformed into a large cottage with European plan only.

In 1987, a road (25 west) is built about 30 km (20 mi) south of the outfitter, at Flamand Lake. The Farrar family buys the small Pourvoirie du Lac Oscar that was at that time only accessible by floatplane, and extends it. A 700 000$ investment project that consists of constructing 13 cottages in white pine and a check station. This time too, Donald and Jean-Claude put their shoulders to the wheel. The Lac Oscar and Chez Farrar outfitters become one of the most popular hunting and fishing destinations in Québec.

Now neighbours and almost joined, the two legal entities "La pourvoirie Chez Farrar inc." and "La pourvoirie du Lac Oscar inc." are informally called "Les pourvoirie Oscar & Farrar" (The Oscar & Farrar outfitters), which we like. Despite our large surface area and our numerous cottages, we do our best to combine convenience, comfort and a nature as untamed as possible. Our concern for the forest pushed us to sign agreements with the great logging companies in order to insure the preservation of the resource.

And we have a lot of projects! After more than 25 years in business, we still love what we do. Our Web site is our newest addition. With the site, we hope to continue to give you information, but mostly, to share with you the passion within us.

The history continues little by little.
